Barbara Lobosco - Turning The Ordinary Into Artistic Extraordinary

Immerse yourself in beautiful landscapes and remarkable ICM photos captured by Barbara Lobosco. Read about her journey as a photographer and learn how she's gone from a beginner to a professional during her time behind the lens.

One of my favorite things about photography is how much improvement comes into focus over time. TheLifeWeCapture previously featured Barbara Lobosco and her wonderful work, and I’m very excited to write a fresh article with updated insight into her journey as a photographer while also showcasing some of her newest photography!

Before I begin, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Barbara for the continued support and trust she has shown toward TheLifeWeCapture over the years. She is always present in supporting the photographers we feature across social media and consistently promotes the TLWC project on her own accord. Photographers like Barbara are a major reason why I continue pushing to make this platform the best it can possibly be. It’s truly an honor to write about her creative journey and showcase some of her incredible landscape, city, and abstract photography.

About Barbara Lobosco’s Photography

Barbara’s photography journey began in 2014 when she traded in her blackboard for a camera after she closed out a successful and fulfilling career as a teacher in New York. Her early focuses behind the lens mostly consisted of sunsets and landscapes, and as a New Yorker she found herself traveling throughout Long Island capturing all of its endless beauty. It wasn’t long before she was hooked and finding herself out in the field more and more with a camera in hand.

Currently, you’ll see her sharing photos from the ample amount of time she spends outdoors. She is an avid hiker and biker, and is always carrying around her camera capturing her favorite moments. Barbara has the deepest connection with the natural beauty of our world; feeling most connected to trees, mountains, and waterwalls, but you’ll also be able to catch her in the city exploring the beautiful and diverse architecture New York City has to offer. She is always on the hunt for captivating scenes that will invoke emotions and stories for her audiences, which she does fantastically after applying her artistic touch to each photo.

The previous time I wrote about Barbara’s photography we capped off the article with her sharing a desire about getting more involved with ICM photography, and since that time she has captured some incredible pieces!

ICM photography, Intentional camera movement (ICM), is when a camera is moved during the exposure for a creative or artistic effect. This causes the image points to move across the recording medium, producing varied effects such as streaking, textures, and layers in the resulting image. As you can see ICM adds such a unique and creative style to any composition. It's its own special niche and truly transforms a simple scene into a work of art. It's amazing to see how far Barbara's skillset has grown in ICM and I always look forward to seeing her new posts. Especially with nature scenes like the one below.

The turning point of her photography came after meeting a group of photographers on a pier who were involved with West End Arts of Long Beach, NY. This meeting of fellow enthusiasts propelled her journey into becoming a professional photographer where she has since achieved a position as Trustee for the group, and she now participates in curated exhibitions and fine arts events all over Long Island. If you’re from Long Island you might notice she’s also the West End Arts publicity photographer!

Barbara’s Photography Approach & Lessons Learned

Well seasoned photographers understand that compelling photographs are often created long before the shutter is ever pressed. The act of visualizing a scene beforehand plays a significant role in both the emotional impact and overall quality of an image. Barbara is one of those photographers who fully embraces the importance of preparation before ever stepping foot into the field.

Barbara draws her inspiration from a legendary photographer, Ansel Adams. Adams is know to capture photographs with intention rather than impulse, was widely respected for his philosophy of pre-visualization, which is the idea of seeing and understanding the final image before capturing it. Instead of simply documenting a scene, photographers who adopt this mindset will learn to create photographs filled with life, emotion, and purpose.

Light Fall In The Hallow - Barbara Lobosco

Barbara follows suit in the same footsteps as Adams does with his photography and that is with intention and purpose. There are days where she heads out with a clear subject in mind, such as landscapes, architecture, or the vibrant colors of autumn. Then there are other times she prepares specifically for her creative techniques such as ICM photography or long exposures, often focusing her attention on subjects like trees and natural patterns.

The planning stage is just as important as the moment of each capture itself. Before arriving at a location, she'll visualize the mood she hopes to create and waits patiently for the right conditions to develop. A fog covered morning, soft diffused light, or dramatic weather can completely transform the emotional atmosphere of any scene. Alongside that visualization comes an understanding of camera settings, composition, depth of field, and the importance of light throughout the frame.

Her conservative editing style further strengthens the authenticity of her captures. Her style avoids overwhelming the scenes with excessive edits, and allows the natural beauty of the moment to remain intact, which gives her viewers the opportunity to experience the scene much as she witnessed it herself.

Luminous Spirit - Barbara Lobosco

Many photographers will overlook the importance of this process of visualization and patience. These processes are often what can separate a simple photograph from an image that truly feels alive.

All photographers and artists alike will face challenges throughout their journey. Some challenges Barbara has faced s in her creative process involve creating depth and symmetry within a composition. However, with her dutiful observation, consistent dedication to experimenting, and thoughtful framing of each photo, she continues to refine all the elements of her photography to produce images that feel balanced, immersive, and emotionally engaging.

One Foggy Day - Barbara Lobosco

Take this photo above, One Foggy Day, and notice how dramatic the mood becomes with the foggy element added into it. I don't know about you, but it gives me the spooky vibes and I love how Barbara used leading lines from the trail to lead my eyes all the way through the depth of the entire frame. It's truly a tremendous piece!

Barbara’s Favorite Photography Moment

“My image Creative Way of Hope (featured above) was shot at Hempstead Lake Park on a dreary foggy winter morning. Tired of being stuck indoors, I made the decision to head to the park and see what I could capture.”  - Barbara Lobosco

Not only is this one of Barbara’s favorite moments, it has quickly become one of her most popular photos to date. She mentioned just how perfect the conditions were in order to capture such a moody reflection off the lake. It’s a photo that carries weight and allows the viewer to embrace just how the moment felt as if they were there themselves.

Previously Featured Moment

In Barbara’s previous article a moment she shared with us was during an expedition she took with 5 fellow photographers to Utah in order to capture the Annular Eclipse. She walked away with a mesmerizing photo of a shooting star burning over the tops of Duck Creek Village.

Until We Write Again

Barbara’s story and journey as a photographer has been a welcoming splash of inspiration for my own photography and commitment to TheLifeWeCapture. Her photography showcases the heart and soul she pours into everything she captures and her actions show how she is a supportive artist who wants to see everyone else succeed.

One of my favorite things is how her passion for capturing her favorite moments has opened doors for her to fully embrace a new life from behind the lens. To me it shows how important it is to stick with our interests in life and pursue everything we want because we will most certainly establish wonderful connections with likeminded people along the way.

I encourage every photographer to mold not only their approach to photography as Barbara does, but to follow in her footsteps when it comes to uplifting all of your fellow creatives you connect with inside of this wonderful life experience.
